Totentanz Miniatures, from Bilbao in Spain, continue to offer releases across a range of gaming genres in 15mm. They have kindly sent some of their most recent offerings, a number of packs of miniatures for use in the Thirty Years War, that tumultuous period when Europe was ravaged by warfare.
The first pack is 30YWINF27, a Cossack Foot Command consisting of four miniatures. These are quite characterful chaps, in traditional Cossack dress and two with the classic Cossack hairstyle. We have a standard bearer, musician and two leader types, one standing with a sabre and a pistol stuck in his belt and the other wielding a mace.
The next pack is 30YWINF29, consisting of eight Cossack musketmen ‘at rest’, leaning on their musket stands and holding their weapons in fairly casual poses. There is a wealth of detail sculpted onto these figures and a nice touch of character in the poses, although you do get two of each pose.
To complement the musketmen pack is 30YWINF28, eight miniatures once more, designed to represent a group of Cossack spearmen. Very characterful, detailed miniatures, although two of each pose once more and you have to add your own spears.
The last pack is 30YWCAB30, which is entitled Medium Cavalry with Carbine. There are horses and riders in this pack to make three figures in total. These are fairly generic horsemen in hats festooned with ostentatious feathers, so they would be suitable for a number of armies during this period. Each rider is wielding his ‘carbine’ one-handed whilst riding, and are more suggestive of pistol armed troops. Both horse and rider are in active poses, with a real sense of movement.
All in all, these are high quality miniatures with a wealth of detail sculpted onto them and are very evocative of the period. However, with so much detail being present on the models, they would reward a careful paint job rather than a ‘mass’ painting approach. Also, I personally find repeated poses in a pack something of a shame but these are 15mm miniatures after all and that may not be so obvious at this size. These and the other releases from Totentanz offer the gamer the opportunity to add some characterful pieces to their armies and the chance to build units fairly quickly. I look forward to seeing what else they produce in the future.
