As always, we ran a competition and a ‘pop survey’ to celebrate another milestone in our number of Facebook ‘Likes’, this time when we went over 7,000.
Our latest ‘snapshot’ survey (which received around 1,200 responses) has some interesting results. Obviously, this is based upon input from those who contributed from the world of social media rather than being taken directly from WI magazine readers.
If we compare the results to our last “what’s your favorite Wargames Period’ survey, we can see a definite continuance in the dominance of the World War Two gaming scene and a major increase in those whose primary focus is Fantasy and Sci-Fi.
When compared to our survey results from February 2015, there is a downswing in many of the main historical periods, excluding a small increase in the Napoleonic era. Yet we know that many of these periods are still popular amongst the readers of the magazine.
Is this trend towards Fantasy and Sci-fi partly down to the levels of support and marketing amongst the larger wargaming manufacturers? With World War Two ‘winning’ our survey again, is this down to a similar approach being taken by key companies, using the strategies of one part of the industry to promote a historical period?
It is perhaps worth reiterating the desire of the WI magazine to promote the whole of the wargaming hobby and as wide a spectrum of the gaming industry as possible – share your gaming or product news with us and we’ll use every one of our platforms to spread the word!
We run similar surveys throughout the year, connected to your thoughts on trends in the hobby etc., so keep checking our Facebook page for the next one!
