For many 28mm Napoleonic wargamers this box set is going to be an absolute must have. Light Dragoons were a key element of the British Army in all the major campaigns of the period and their uniform was very distinctive. Especially during the earlier period with the Tarleton helmet.
If that wasn’t enough, this also arguably represents the best value hard plastic cavalry set you can buy. The level of detail and overall quality is excellent and the contents follow the usual Perry formula, for plastic sets, with figures and unit bases included. This time however, they have gone a step further with the options included in the box. As well as the usual heads and arms there are optional torsos, legs, scabbards and shabraque corners for the officer’s horse.
The reason for this being the Light Dragoon uniform changed considerably mid period. What it means for the modeller/gamer is the ability to produce *14 horses and 28 complete riders depicting early and late period with a further option for the tropical helmet. Fortunately the horse furniture didn’t change and the saddle cloth and blanket roll were for the most part the same colour, so it’s possible to use the one set of horses for both rider options. Perry’s should be applauded for this, as other manufacturers would produce two separate box sets, and they sell the horse sprues separately via mail order should you wish to purchase an additional set.
To complete the miniatures, the uniform guide gives a concise depiction of the regiments and their facing colours together with useful information and tips on other variations such as hot climate shakos in tan or white. All in all a first class box set and fully recommended.
PROS: Excellent quality, 2 sets of riders, bases and concise uniform guide
CONS: None unless you prefer metal figures
