Note: The text below is the transcript of our unboxing video (for those who would rather read than listen).
Operation Wacht am Rhein (Watch on the Rhine) was a desperate gamble by German forces to slow down the advance of the Allied powers and seize a number of strategic locations in Belgium, France and Luxemburg. Launched in the depths of winter, through terrain considered unsuitable for tanks and military vehicles, the Germans cut through the Allied lines initially, but soon struggled to maintain their momentum. This new Battle of the Bulge Campaign book for Bolt Action allows players to game this pivotal series of battles and introduces a number of new Late War forces and Special Rules.
The book uses a number of historically based scenarios to re-enact the battles on the tabletop, ranging from the initial German retreat to the famous Battle of Bastogne.
Each Scenario also incudes new weapon rules, new unit information and unique rules for particular personalities or units associated with the Battle of the Bulge. Most of these can also be used for other Late War period battle.
Some of our favourite parts of this excellent resource, include
-information on Panzerbrigade 150 with their ‘ersatz’ (fake or replacement) American AFVs and vehicles.
– the efforts of the Allied-uniformed elite German Brandenburg Kommandoes to sow confusion and conduct sabotage operations
– the Operation Northwind scenario
– the wealth of information on fielding Free French units for the Late War period, including French Resistance fighters and French colonial troops such as the feared Moroccan Goumiers.
Every page contains a little of the history of the battle and units involved, plus snippets of additional interesting information. However, like most of the Bolt Action supplements, this is very much a wargamer’s resource, allowing you to quickly and easily structure the forces you have, or decide on your next purchases from supporting figures ranges from Warlord or indeed other manufacturers.
In addition to the high quality photographs of miniatures, there is some great artwork and really useful uniform plates taken from relevant Osprey books
Overall, this is exactly what one would hope to see from a gaming supplement, with every page full of what you need for your tabletop re-creations of this epic struggle.
