Published in collaboration with Sarissa Precision Ltd this full colour A4 book, by Sarissa’s chief designer and building painter Gary Faulkner, is designed to help those of you who want to take your MDF laser cut buildings to the next level. “What’s to learn?” I hear you ask; “don’t you just pop out the parts, glue them together and put them on the wargames table? “ Well, you can do, but after reading this book your eyes will be opened to many more possibilities.
Below is a transcript of the above video, for those who prefer to read rather than watch.
The author begins by talking about the different types of MDF, different thicknesses and what warps and what doesn’t. I found this a surprisingly interesting read, as I had always assumed that MDF was all much the same.
He proceeds to talk about the basic materials you will need when putting the models together, covering knives, glues, spray cans and brushes. The book then covers eight sample builds each designed to showcase a different aspect of MDF building construction. Each build is pictured from flat pack, through building to completion with clear accompanying text so the reader can easily follow what’s going on. Starting with a couple of houses, the author then covers a church, a timber planked ‘Wild West’ building, a Tudor timber frame house, a derelict or destroyed house, an electricity substation before finishing with a ‘brick built’ city block.
Throughout Gary gives some genuinely useful advice about how to put together, paint and then finish your model building, moving it from being a nice model to an outstanding model!
Ideas include weathering brickwork, internal wallpaper and flooring – especially on the damaged buildings where this can be seen – realistic woodwork and even marble flooring. The book finishes with some full-page colour samples of flooring, wallpaper, brickwork and roof tiles for you to scan and print at home to practice the techniques described.
The high production value and the glorious full-page colour images make this a great book just to flick through and enjoy. There is so much good information in here for anyone who makes MDF buildings that it’s difficult to impart it all in one short review. However, if you make MDF buildings and want to make them look stunning, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Top marks to both author and publishers.
It’s worth noting that we ran a series of MDF construction and painting articles by Gary Faulkner in Wargames Illustrated magazine. Wi Prime Members can find all the articles by searching The Vault for ‘MDF’.
