Alternative Armies are a company who have been around for a number of years. They are well-known for their Flintloque ranges, a collection of rules and pseudo-Napoleonic miniatures with a fantasy twist. However, they have expanded their product range to include many more genres.
One of their most recent releases is the Sulphur range, a number of figures, vehicles and vehicle expansion sets. These are designed to compliment the Sulphur rules, which operate at skirmish level. If you imagine the Mad Max movies, you’re not too far away from the intention.
The pack we have for review is SSK2 or Skinner Squad II. These figures are realistically proportioned and highly detailed, cast in a high quality resin / plastic mix. They are very characterful, with improvised weapons, ragged clothing and the occasional gas mask.

These miniatures are of the slightly ‘new school’ of PA gaming and are good archetypes. As a fan of the PA gaming genre, I am impressed by the overall look.
Also sent for review was Flower of Evil, a mutated plant or alien creature that could be on the prowl for human victims. This is around 34mm tall and would perhaps fit in with a range of figure sizes. Perhaps this creature and his friends are to blame for the collapse of society?
These are useful miniatures for PA gamers, albeit ones that only really ‘fit’ with each other. The material used for casting is sturdy and obviously works well with capturing every nuance used by the sculptor. I hope to see more from this range and any others from the increasingly diversified Alternative Armies.
