Highgate Miniatures is a relatively recent addition to the plethora of small companies who make our hobby as diverse as it is. They have chosen to ‘specialise’ in the world of Gothic Horror, producing a range of vampire and vampire hunter characters which pay homage to the realms of literary and cinematic interpretations of this world.
These are very well-sculpted, extremely characterful miniatures, with a Victorian look. The vampire hunter packs are a little static looking in pose at times but are very nicely done, with some identifiable characters but also some unique heroes full of vengeance or commitment to opposing the curse of vampirism. In a way, these more static, human poses suitably counterpoint the changes wrought by the vampire existence.
And it is the vampire figures that are truly exceptional. Whether recently turned, fledgling vampires or vampire lords and masters, these figures all have a bestial, fluid-looking quality, with poses which look beyond the human norm or have a beguiling quality all of their own. These really are some of the most characterful figures I’ve seen in a while, perfectly matching the ‘look’ that is the Gothic Horror creature of the night. The vampire figures range from 28 to 32mm, with the masters and lords being the largest of all.
Each of the figures comes with a resin base, a stylised version of a cobblestoned street, maintaining the Victorian Gothic aesthetic. A peg on the foot of the figures fits effortlessly into the base, adding to the overall look.
These are great miniatures for those looking for the ‘true’ Gothic Horror of the Victorian period. They are highly recommended as such and are well worth further investigation. Although Highgate Miniatures is a company in its own right, the figures are currently on offer from Oshiro Models, a great site to visit and browse in its own right.
