Brunswickers The Black Brunswickers

Our Napoleonic themed articles in WI272 took us down an interesting path, following the career of Wilhelm von Dornberg, a German officer who fought in six different uniforms over the course of his career. One of these was in the uniform of a Black Brunswicker; another was as an officer in the army of the Kingdom of Westphalia.

This led us to rework an article we printed just over four years ago. A Brief Guide to the Black Brunswickers of the Napoleonic Wars, by Dr. Gavin Hughes, not only includes the history of this colourful force, but also a scenario that pits the Black Duke’s men against the men of Jerome Bonaparte’s Westphalian army. How could we not dig this article out from the archive (and WI221) and present it to you here?
